As we get ready for the first college football weekend in bulk, I’d like to take a little time to thank you for being a part of this, whether you signed up for a free or paid subscription.
A couple months ago, I left a comfortable job I loved with DraftKings Network to primarily focus on The Gunslinger Buzz newsletter. I figured if I’m going to be charging for paid subscriptions, I better be putting in far more than full-time hours to make sure this is worth the money, and this led to August being the biggest monthly increase in paid subscribers.
I also did this because of how many of you signed up despite putting this thing together without a big online presence. Somehow you’re finding this and when you do, you’re signing up, which is awesome.
Finally, my career goal is to earn a living through my own college football site. I’m nowhere near that yet, but I’m optimistic for what can happen this fall. Last college football season was completely free as I tried things out to see what works and what doesn’t, but it’s full speed ahead this time around.
I’ll continue pushing hard for new subscribers, but the best marketing is always through word-of-mouth from readers especially for a project like this. I pay for independent newsletters and podcasts I enjoy because I know without support from their audience, they go away.
If you find value in what I’m doing, upgrade for a paid subscription or share it with someone you know who would also enjoy this. By the end of next Monday, all 133 FBS programs will have at least one game in, and the recruiting quiet period will be lifted this weekend. Today is the perfect time to sign up.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL QB REPORT
Quarterback Central | Teams | Players
Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said QB Tyler Van Dyke (Stats) is “ready to roll” during his appearance on The Joe Rose Show on Monday morning. This comes after Sunday’s report from CaneSport’s Matt Shodell that the Hurricanes’ starting quarterback is questionable for Friday’s season-opener vs. Miami (OH) with a hand injury. It shared Van Dyke hasn’t thrown since last Tuesday’s practice with a 50/50 chance to be ready for the opener. If Van Dyke isn’t healthy enough to play, Jacurri Brown (Stats) would likely get the start over true freshman Emory Williams (Stats), who appeared to close the gap during camp.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said he expects QBs Kyle McCord (Stats) and Devin Brown (Stats) to play in Saturday’s season opener at Indiana, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. This news came prior to Saturday’s scrimmage, so it’ll be interesting to see whether that weekend practice created any separation in either direction. Regardless, this quarterback battle still seems to be dead even at this point, and it may have to be decided during the regular season.
Alabama is expected to start multiple quarterbacks this season, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Jalen Milroe (Stats) and Ty Simpson (Stats) appeared to have separated themselves from Tyler Buchner (Stats) during fall camp with Milroe as the slight favorite. Milroe and Simpson went into camp with the advantage of being familiar with the program, while Buchner transferred to the Crimson Tide in late April. All three may play Saturday’s season opener against Middle Tennessee, but the real question will be who gets the snaps in a Week 2 matchup with Texas.
DEPTH CHART & INJURY REPORT
Week 1 College football QB depth charts & injuries
Utah listed QB Cam Rising (Stats) at the top of its depth chart heading into Thursday’s season opener against Florida. Rising previously said his availability for this matchup could come down to the wire as he continues to recover from a torn ACL. With top backup Brandon Rose (Stats) out indefinitely with an undisclosed injury, Bryson Barnes (Stats) is the No. 2 option over Nate Johnson (Stats).
