The spring transfer portal entry window closed up this weekend, but programs have 48 hours to officially get players into the portal, so we could see a few more entrants today and tomorrow.
Two Big Ten starting quarterbacks hit the portal prior to the deadline, and they’ll lead off today’s Gunslinger Buzz Daily coming out of a busy weekend.

Monday message from The Gunslinger Buzz
After experimenting with publishing times over the past few weeks, I’ve come to a conclusion. You don’t care what time of day the Gunslinger Buzz Daily comes out despite what all newsletter strategy articles say (I’ve read every one). Our open rates are consistent and above the average for daily newsletters no matter when it’s sent to your inbox.
Most news comes out in the morning and midday, so I’ll stick to publishing in the afternoon with the latest breaking news instead of holding it for a morning release with information you already read the day before. If news hits at night, of course that’ll be covered in the Gunslinger Buzz Daily along with Twitter updates throughout the day.

Nebraska QB Casey Thompson enters transfer portal
SCOOP: The Athletic’s Max Olson
Casey Thompson (Stats) started 10 games in his lone season at Nebraska that ended with a season-ending shoulder surgery that made him very limited during spring practice. He was expected to battle with Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims (Stats) for the starting spot and has one year of eligibility after spending four seasons with Texas. Thompson was expected to visit Auburn and posted he was in Alabama yesterday, according to his Instagram story.
Oregon lands 2024 3-star QB Luke Moga
SCOOP: Luke Moga
After delaying his commitment for Friday, April 28, Luke Moga (AZ) committed to Oregon on that day anyways. This was a bit of a surprise considering the Ducks’ increased interest in 4-star Michael Van Buren (MD), but they’re open to going after two quarterbacks in the 2024 class. Both QBs were on campus for the spring game this weekend, and so was 2025 4-star Akili Smith Jr. (CA), who received a prediction to Oregon from On3’s Josh Newberg.
Michigan State QB Payton Thorne enters transfer portal
SCOOP: 247Sports’ Chris Hummer
Payton Thorne (Stats) was a two-year starter at Michigan State, but the Spartans had an open competition this spring that also included Noah Kim (Stats) and Katin Houser (Stats). Thorne has two years of eligibility remaining, and it’ll be interesting to see if the Spartans go to the portal for a quarterback with starting experience. Michigan State also lost walk-on QB Christian Banks (Stats), who entered the portal after his true freshman season.

Boston College adds UCF transfer QB Thomas Castellanos, loses Peter Delaportas
SCOOPS: Thomas Castellanos | Peter Delaportas
Thomas Castellanos (Stats) has three years of eligibility remaining at Boston College with a redshirt season still available after playing in five games at UCF as a true freshman last season. Emmett Morehead (Stats) is still the favorite to start Week 1, and reserve QB Peter Delaportas (Stats) entered his name to the portal after not playing a snap as a true freshman last fall.
