Quarterbacks are committing earlier than ever, which leads to a ton of high school prospects reopening their recruitment prior to National Signing Day. During the 2024 class, I counted 31 QBs flipping to or from an FBS program for reasons like coaching changes, a change of heart, teams entering the mix late and NIL inducements (technically illegal but I’ll never tell).
Below is a look at the results for every quarterback who flipped his commitment at some point prior to signing in the 2024 recruiting class.
5-star Dylan Raiola
Winner: Nebraska
Losers: Georgia, Ohio State
Matt Rhule made the biggest splash early in his tenure with a late flip of Dylan Raiola prior to the Early Signing Period. Georgia still made it out very well with 4-star Ryan Puglisi, who stuck with the Bulldogs even after Raiola committed. After losing Raiola early in the cycle, the Buckeyes signed 5-star Air Noland.
3-star Daniel Kaelin
Winner: Nebraska
Loser: Missouri
The Cornhuskers landed a talented in-state quarterback, who signed even after Dylan Raiola committed. Meanwhile, Missouri ended up with 3-star Aidan Glover a month after Kaelin flipped to Nebraska.
4-star Michael Van Buren
Winner: Mississippi State
Loser: Oregon
Days after losing a Josh Flowers commitment, Van Buren announced his flip to the Bulldogs in December. The Ducks already had a quarterback in the boat with 3-star Luke Moga prior to Van Buren committing.
3-star Josh Flowers
Winner: Arkansas State
Loser: Mississippi State
Flowers committed to the Red Wolves on Day 1 of the Early Signing Period two weeks after announcing his decommitment from Mississippi State. He committed to the previous coaching staff for the Bulldogs, which signed 4-star Michael Van Buren.
4-star Tyler Cherry
Winner: Indiana
Loser: Duke
Cherry committed to Indiana’s new coaching staff a day before the Early Signing Period. He had been committed to Duke’s previous coaching staff, and the Blue Devils are without a QB in the class.
3-star Alberto Mendoza
Winner: Indiana
Loser: James Madison
Mendoza followed the James Madison coaching staff to Indiana as the Hoosiers finished with a two-quarterback class. Meanwhile, the Dukes ended up with 3-star JC Evans.
3-star Timothy Carpenter
Winner: Tulsa
Loser: Indiana
Carpenter committed to the previous Indiana coaching staff before reopening his recruitment. He joined the Golden Hurricane in January.
4-star Hauss Hejny
Winner: TCU
Loser: Duke
Hejny was briefly committed to Duke last spring before landing at TCU. He was the first of two Duke quarterbacks to decommit as the Blue Devils remain quarterback-less in the 2024 class.
4-star Marcos Davila
Winner: Purdue
Loser: TCU
Davila’s recruitment picked up shortly after making an early commitment to TCU, and Purdue was the big winner. The Horned Frogs responded well by bringing in Hauss Hejny.
3-star JC Evans
Winner: James Madison
Loser: Jacksonville State
Evans flipped to James Madison on the first day of the Early Signing Period to replace Alberto Mendoza. Jacksonville State has not signed a quarterback in the 2024 class.
4-star Anthony Maddox Jr.
Winner: Ole Miss
Loser: Texas A&M
Maddox had been committed to the Aggies’ previous coach staff for several months before flipping to Ole Miss a few days before the Early Signing Period. Texas A&M hung on to 4-star Miles O’Neill, who committed after Maddox originally committed to the Aggies.
4-star Demond Williams Jr.
Winner: Arizona
Loser: Ole Miss
This was a short-lived victory for Arizona because he already transferred to to follow head coach Jedd Fisch at Washington. The Wildcats have yet to sign a 2024 QB, while Ole Miss ended with 4-star Anthony Maddox Jr.
3-star EJ Caminong
Winner: Cal
Loser: Washington
Caminong left in-state Washington even before the coaching change to be the top quarterback in Cal’s 2024 class. Washington signed 4-star Dermaricus Davis and 4-star Demond Williams Jr. from the transfer portal.
3-star Paul Kessler
Winner: Florida
Loser: Cal
I do not believe this is public knowledge, but a source told me Kessler was briefly committed to Cal before reclassifying from the 2023 recruiting class to 2024. He joined 5-star DJ Lagway as Gators’ quarterbacks to sign in this class.
3-star Trever Jackson
Winner: Florida State
Loser: Ole Miss
The Seminoles landed a late steal by bringing in Jackson as a walk-on prospect. He was committed to the Rebels for two months as they ended up with Anthony Maddox Jr.
3-star Brendan Zurbrugg
Winner: Oklahoma
Losers: Syracuse, Northwestern
Zurbrugg committed to Northwestern after being committed to Syracuse for a week and reopened his recruitment again after head coach Pat Fitzgerald was fired. He joined 4-star Michael Hawkins as QBs in the Sooners’ 2024 class. The Orange ended up with 3-star Jakhari Williams, and the Wildcats signed 3-star Ryan Boe.
3-star Jakhari Williams
Winner: Syracuse
Loser: Georgia Tech
After being committed to Georgia Tech for six months, he decommitted last spring. A few months later, he committed to Syracuse as the Yellow Jackets finished with 4-star Aaron Philo as their guy.
4-star Aaron Philo
Winner: Georgia Tech
Loser: Minnesota
Less than a month after losing 3-star Jakhari Williams, Georgia Tech replaced him with Philo, who had been committed to Minnesota for a month before opening things back up. The Gophers ended up with 3-star Drake Lindsey.
3-star Ryan Boe
Winner: Northwestern
Loser: North Dakota State
Boe flipped to Northwestern days before the Early Signing Period after being committed to North Dakota State for six months. The Bison signed 2-star Jack Sulik.
3-star Karson Gordon
Winner: UCLA
Loser: UNLV
Gordon was the first of two quarterbacks to flip to the Bruins after being committed the Rebels, which finished with 3-star Gael Ochoa. It appears Gordon will stick with the Bruins despite the late coaching change.
3-star Henry Hasselbeck
Winner: UCLA
Loser: Michigan State
Hasselbeck committed to the previous Michigan State coaching staff and reopened his recruitment in December before choosing UCLA. It appears Hasselbeck will stick with the Bruins despite the late coaching change. The Spartans finished with 3-star QBs Ryland Jessee and Alessio Milivojevic.
3-star Ryland Jessee
Winner: Michigan State
Loser: Utah State
Jessee was committed to Utah State for nearly six months before flipping to Michigan State on the first day of the Early Signing Period. The Aggies are still left without a quarterback in the class.
3-star Alessio Milivojevic
Winner: Michigan State
Loser: Ball State
Milivojevic was clearly a target for the new Michigan State coaching staff, and it was able to snag him a few days before the Early Signing Period. Ball State does not have a quarterback in the class.
3-star Gael Ochoa
Winner: UNLV
Loser: UTEP
Ochoa seemed to quietly decommit from UTEP where he had been committed for several months. The Miners ended up with 3-star QBs JP Pickles and Shay Smith.
3-star Danny O’Neil
Winner: San Diego State
Loser: Colorado
O’Neil decommitted from Colorado when OC Sean Lewis was demoted from his role but followed Lewis to San Diego State where he’s now the head coach. The Buffaloes do not have a 2024 quarterback signed.
3-star Adrian Posse
Winner: UAB
Loser: Auburn
Posse committed to Auburn’s previous coaching staff before decommitting and landing with UAB months later. The Tigers wound up with 4-star Walker White.
3-star Deyon Batiste
Winner: Wyoming
Loser: Iowa State
After being committed to Iowa State for several months, Batiste reopened his recruitment in December. Two weeks later, he signed with Wyoming, and the Cyclones signed 3-star Connor Moberly to the class.
3-star Jim Ogle
Winner: Louisiana-Monroe
Loser: Troy
Ogle flipped to Louisiana-Monroe on the first day of the Early Signing Period after originally committing to Troy in the spring. The Trojans signed 3-star Caleb McCreary.
3-star Abe Fenwick
Winner: West Virginia
Loser: William & Mary
After being committed to William & Mary for nearly six months, Fenwick flipped to West Virginia as a walk-on. The Tribe signed unrated 2024 QB Joey Tomasso.
3-star Chris Dietrich
Winner: Temple
Loser: Temple
Dietrich decommitted from Temple and announced he’d reclassify to 2025 before a change of plans brought him back to the Owls’ 2024 class.
3-star Neko Fann
Winner: Mercer
Loser: Middle Tennessee
Fann committed to the previous coaching staff at Middle Tennessee before heading to the FCS with Mercer. The Blue Raiders wound up with 3-star Roman Gagliano.
